A full review of the biopsy report, staging scans and any treatment already started, followed by a plan — what the options are, what each one is likely to achieve, what it will demand of the patient, and roughly what it costs.
Bring every report you have, including old ones. If reports are on a phone, that is fine.
Sampling of marrow from the back of the hip under local anaesthetic, to diagnose or monitor blood cancers and to investigate unexplained anaemia or low counts. About twenty minutes, same-day discharge, mild ache for a day or two afterwards.
A long-term intravenous line placed in the upper arm for patients on prolonged chemotherapy. It removes the need for repeated cannulation and protects the smaller veins. We insert the line, dress it, and teach the family how to keep it clean at home.
Needle sampling of accessible lumps and lymph nodes, sent for histopathology and, where the diagnosis requires it, immunohistochemistry and molecular studies at accredited reference laboratories.
Drainage of fluid from the abdomen or chest for relief of symptoms and for diagnostic analysis. Suitable cases are done at the clinic; where the volume or the patient’s condition makes hospital safer, we will say so rather than proceed.
Pre-cycle assessment, blood count review, dose modification and management of side effects between hospital cycles — the part of chemotherapy that happens away from the infusion chair and often gets least attention.
Pain management including opioid titration, anti-emetics, nutritional advice, and honest conversations about what treatment can and cannot change. Available alongside active treatment, not only at the end of it.
Hereditary cancer panels and tumour molecular profiling arranged through accredited laboratories, with pre-test and post-test counselling for the patient and, where relevant, for family members who may need testing themselves.
